Diabetes, Obesity After 60 May Drive Up Breast Cancer Risk

(HealthDay News) -- A woman's risk of developing breast cancer appears to rise if she has diabetes or is obese after age 60, a new study indicates.

Previous research has linked obesity and increased breast cancer risk, but "the diabetes link had not been clearly shown," said researcher Dr. Hakan Olsson, a professor of oncology at Lund University in Lund, Sweden.

He is scheduled to present his findings this week at the 2011 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

The diabetes link held even after he accounted for obesity and levels of blood lipids, such as cholesterol. It is an association, however, not proven cause and effect.

A strength of the study, Olsson said, is that it looked at the population as a whole, not only women with breast cancer. He studied the medical records of more than 2,700 patients for up to 10 years before they developed breast cancer and also records for about 20,500 patients who never developed cancer. Read more...

Organic and Natural Skin, Hair and Body Care by the Youn Moderator: dreddy

We see natural skin care education as a key to our strength and viability as a sensitive skin, hair and body care product company.

We believe consumers should be informed to enable them to make the best choices about organic skin care.

We have discovered that knowing what NOT to put on your face, body and hair is as important and perhaps more important than what you do.

Since there is so much confusion in the market place, we have made a list of the most dangerous and damaging ingredients commonly used in the face, body and hair care industry.

Some of these ingredients you can not pronounce unless you are a chemist and many of these are listed on products using a different name, but we will continue to update this list to keep you informed of these damaging, allergenic, and many times carcinogenic pollutants to your body and the environment.

Some of these ingredients are more dangerous then others, but we believe NONE of these ingredients should be applied to your face, hair or body under any circumstances and you should avoid them at all cost. Read more...

Juice to Prevent Heart Disease?

Do you know anything about a new kind of orange juice that lowers C-reactive protein and cholesterol?
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a substance found in blood that is a marker for inflammation in the body, especially at the cellular level. The hsCRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) test is now used to measure this marker as a risk factor for heart disease. We now know that inflammation plays a central role in heart disease, but are not sure whether an elevated hsCRP result is a specific marker of inflammation in the coronary arteries or a more general indicator of inflammation.

However, lowering CRP levels can reduce the risk. In a study published in the January 6th, 2005, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic showed that clogged coronary arteries had not worsened among 502 patients who were most successful at lowering their CRP levels. Fruit and vegetable carotenoids protect women from breast, ovarian cancer

Achieving good health and avoiding disease involves eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods on a regular basis, particularly those that together provide the full spectrum of phytonutrients that each contribute to a different aspect of good health. Unfortunately, many people are not getting the variety of nutrients they need to stay healthy, including a third of American women that do not consume even the minimal recommendations of fruits and vegetables, which contain important carotenoids that support breast and ovarian health.

Carotenoids are the phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables that give them their rich, unique colors. In women, these organic pigments work to protect them from ovarian and breast cancers, as well as guard against heart disease, inflammation and eye disease, among other things. They are also powerful immune system boosters that improve overall vitality. Read more...

Sugar-Sweetened Drinks May Pose Heart Risks to Women, Study Suggests

(HealthDay News) -- Drinking two or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day may boost a woman's risk for developing heart disease and diabetes -- even if this habit isn't causing her to pack on extra pounds, a new study says.

Sugary sodas and other sweetened beverages are frequent targets in the war on obesity. Many efforts, such as taking these drinks out of vending machines in schools, are aimed at reducing exposure to these beverages and the empty calories they provide. However, the new study suggests that the risks posed by sugar-sweetened sodas and flavored waters may be independent of weight gain.

Middle-aged women who drank two or more sugary beverages a day were close to four times as likely to have high levels of dangerous blood fats called triglycerides and impaired blood sugar levels (known as "prediabetes'), when compared with women who drank less than one sugar-sweetened beverage a day.
