Optimizing Omega-3 Intake May Avert Kidney Cancer

Omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent kidney cancer in women, says a newly published study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.1 While omega-3 consumption is correlated with decreased risks of heart disease, depression, and breast cancer, its role in kidney cancer has previously been unknown.2-4

Scientists followed a group of 61,433 women, aged 40-76, over an average of 15 years. The women completed a food-frequency questionnaire at baseline and at the study's end. Regular consumption of omega-3-rich fatty fishโ€”such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring was associated with a significantly decreased risk of developing renal cell carcinoma, or kidney cancer. By contrast, consumption of lean fish (low in omega-3 fatty acids) did not protect the women against developing kidney cancer.1 Read more...

Vitamin B6 Tied to Lowered Lung Cancer Risk

(HealthDay News) -- A new study shows that people with high levels of a B vitamin are half as likely as others to develop lung cancer. But while the reduction in risk is significant, this doesn't mean that smokers should hit the vitamin aisle instead of quitting.

While the study links vitamin B6, as well as one amino acid, to fewer cases of lung cancer, it doesn't conclude that consuming the nutrients will reduce the risk. Future research is needed to confirm that there's a cause-and-effect relationship at work, not just an association, researchers said.

The research "may lead to important new discoveries. But people should not think that they can pop a few vitamins and be safe smoking," stressed Dr. Norman Edelman, the American Lung Association's chief medical officer.

The findings appear in the June 16 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The researchers examined a study of almost 520,000 Europeans who were recruited between 1992 and 2000. They compared 899 who developed lung cancer by 2006 to 1,770 similarly matched people who hadn't developed the disease.

The researchers found that those with the highest levels of vitamin B6 in their blood were 56 percent less likely to have developed lung cancer than those with the lowest levels. There was a similar difference -- a 48 percent decline -- for those with the highest levels of methionine, an amino acid, compared to those with the lowest concentrations. Read more...

Do Weight-loss Drugs Affect Vitamin Absorption?

Q: Do Weight-loss Drugs Affect Vitamin Absorption?
I am currently taking the drug Orlistat for weight loss. I take it three times a day with meals. Since it interferes with fat absorption, will it have an effect on my daily multi and antioxidant? I also take coenzyme Q10 and omega-3 fatty acids.
A: Orlistat, also known as Xenical, was approved for use by the Food and Drug administration for weight loss in 1999. Orlistat reduces the body's absorption of fat from foods, thereby reducing weight and cholesterol. It does this by blocking the action of lipase, an enzyme in the intestine that breaks down fat. As a result the drug interferes with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and E, as well as other nutrients such as Co-enzyme Q10 that rely on fat for absorption. Since you are taking many of these fat-soluble micronutrients, you will need to make some adjustments to your supplement schedule. Read more...

How can stress, as a diagnosis made by my GP, be treated?

There are four ways to treat stress:
โ€ข The obvious, most successful, but hardest to achieve, is removing the cause of the stress. If your mortgage repayments are in arrears, winning the Pools will solve your problems and remove the stress, but this is a solution for the minority, not the majority. Marriage stress is probably one of the most difficult forms of stress to remove, as bitterness and wrangling over children and property may last for many years aftef a divorce.

The next, and most practical way to deal with stress is to rationalise it. This can involve a combination of several different techniques. Talking is an excellent way of relieving anxiety. Discuss the problem with your spouse, relatives, friends, doctor, work mates or anyone else who will listen. Problems often do not appear as insurmountable once bought into the open. Writing down the details of the problem is another excellent way of telieving anxiety. An insurmountable problem in your mind often appears more manageable on paper, particularly when all your possible options ate diagrammatically attached, to enable a rational view of the situation to be obtained. How large of an effect does dental disease have on heart disease

How large of an effect does dental disease have on heart disease
In a paper published in J Am Dent Assoc 1998 Mar;129(3):301-11 Dr Walter Loesche from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, wrote

"Several recent studies have shown a link between dental disease and coronary heart disease. The authors studied 320 U.S. veterans in a convenience sample to assess the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases among older people. They present cross-sectional data confirming that a statistically significant association exists between a diagnosis of coronary heart disease and certain oral health parameters, such as the number of missing teeth, plaque benzoyl-DL-arginine-naphthylamide test scores, salivary levels of Streptococcus sanguis and complaints of xerostomia. The oral parameters in these subjects were independent of and more strongly associated with coronary heart disease than were recognized risk factors, such as serum cholesterol levels, body mass index, diabetes and smoking status. However, because of the convenience sample studied, these findings cannot be generalized to other populations. "
To translate this article, in this study dental disease was a larger risk factor for heart disease than being overweight, having a high cholesterol level, not exercising or smoking. Click here to see the abstract of the paper. Read more...
