Hospitals raking in cash from unnecessary surgery for dying

Doctors and hospitals in the United States have a financial incentive to perform surgery on dying seniors because Medicare is guaranteed to pay for it, and most of the procedures fail to improve the patients' lives at all.

Several colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health recently reported that 1.8 million Medicare beneficiaries age 65 or older died in 2008, and over 34% were operated on during their last year, 25% in their last month, and 10% in their last week of life.

Other studies show that just the stress of surgery and poor conditions of hospitals is adding to mortality rates, including post surgery pneumonia and heart attacks. To throw salt in the wound, the nation's 175 lowest quality hospitals are actually the highest cost institutions. Read more...

Cancer breakthrough: scientists discover harmless bacteria in soil kills cancer tumors

Cancer remains one of the most feared diseases on the planet -- and cancer patients being treated by mainstream medicine are usually bombarded with radiation and subjected to toxic chemotherapy that destroys healthy cells and weakens the body while trying to kill tumors.

Thankfully, as we are aware, a growing body of research is revealing that many natural substances have cancer prevention and treatment potential, including Mediterranean type foods that fight prostate cancer (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=24272) and walnuts which contain breast cancer preventive phytochemicals.

Now there's evidence a cure for cancer may be all around us and is as common as dirt. In fact, it's something in dirt.

Researcher Aleksandra Kubiak just presented the startling discovery at the Society for General Microbiology's Autumn Conference currently underway at the University of York in the UK. She and other members of a research team from the University of Nottingham and the University of Maastricht have found that a strain of harmless bacteria that is widespread in soil is actually deadly -- not to people but to cancerous tumors. Treat cancer - Recent research shows natural combinations boost IV vitamin C

The latest research on high dose, intravenous vitamin C continues to confirm its cytotoxic effects on many cancers in tissue culture models. Results have been so promising that oncologists are now researching the combination of vitamin C with standard chemo drugs. Not surprisingly, vitamin C was found to boost the effectiveness of several chemo drugs so much that two clinical trials have been started. But recent research has also uncovered several natural compounds that boost the cancer-killing effects of vitamin C and may pave the way for highly effective, all-natural combination therapies in the future. Link Between the Smallpox Vaccine and Death From Heart Disea

A CDC press release tells us seven cases of "cardiac adverse events [three myocardial infarctions, two cases of angina, and two cases of myopericarditis] have been reported among civilian vaccinees since the beginning of the smallpox vaccination program." And another 10 cases of myopericarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle and outer lining of the heart) were reported among those in the military who received the vaccine.

The CDC noted that "a causal association between vaccination and adverse cardiac events in the civilian population is unproven," but that it nonetheless recommends (as a precautionary measure) "that persons with physician-diagnosed cardiac disease with or without symptoms (e.g. previous myocardial infarction, angina, congestive heart failure, or cardiomyopathy) be excluded from vaccination during this smallpox preparedness program." Scientists Discover How Peppermint Soothes Gastric Pain

(HealthDay News) -- New research offers insight into how peppermint helps relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia report that peppermint activates an "anti-pain" channel in the colon. This contributes to relief of pain from inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

"Our research shows that peppermint acts through a specific anti-pain channel called TRPM8 to reduce pain-sensing fibers, particularly those activated by mustard and chili," Dr. Stuart Brierley said in a university news release.

"This is potentially the first step in determining a new type of mainstream clinical treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. This is a debilitating condition and affects many people on a daily basis, particularly women who are twice as likely to experience irritable bowel syndrome," Brierley added. Read more...

Study Compares Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair Methods

(HealthDay News) -- A less-invasive method of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair reduces the short-term risk of death, according to a new U.S. study.

The interim findings are from a nine-year multicenter trial comparing patient outcomes after endovascular and open surgical repair of AAA. The report included postoperative outcomes of up to two years (average 1.8 years of follow-up) for 881 patients, aged 49 or older, who had endovascular repair (444) or open repair (437).

Endovascular repair is performed through a catheter inserted into an artery. Open repair involves an abdominal incision. Of the 45,000 patients in the United States who undergo elective repair of an unruptured AAA each year, more than 1,400 die in the perioperative period -- the first 30 days after surgery or inpatient status. There's limited data available about whether short-term survival is better after endovascular repair compared to open repair Read more...
