Test for Calcium Buildup May Spot Heart Attack, Stroke Risk

(HealthDay News) -- A calcium test performed with the assistance of a CT scanner seems to provide insight into the likelihood that certain patients at moderate risk of heart problems will have a heart attack or stroke, researchers say.

The test to detect coronary calcium can help physicians determine whether the patients should take cholesterol-lowering drugs to reduce their cardiovascular risks, the study authors explained.

At issue are people who fall into the middle area between those who are at high risk of heart problems due to factors like high blood pressure and those who are at low risk. People in the so-called "gray zone" may have risk factors, such as being overweight or having high blood sugar levels, but they aren't considered in great danger.

The question is: Should those in the middle range of risk -- an estimated 6 million people in the United States -- be prescribed the anticholesterol drugs known as statins, which often work well but have side effects? Read more...

Coffee and doughnuts: double-trouble for diabetes risk

Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

Mysterious protective effects of coffee against diabetes have been reported in the past. A 2010 meta-analysis analyzing data from 18 studies reported that each additional cup of coffee consumed per day was associated with a 7% reduction in risk of diabetes.1 This was surprising, especially because coffee consumption has been shown to raise glucose levels after a meal so you would expect it to worsen diabetes, not help it. However, this is true of both decaffeinated and regular coffee, although regular coffee raises blood glucose more than decaf.2 Read more...

Meat Lovers Face Greater Risk of Bladder Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- Eating meat frequently, especially when it's well-done or cooked at high temperatures, can boost the risk of bladder cancer, a new study suggests.

"It's well-known that meat cooked at high temperatures generates heterocyclic amines that can cause cancer," study presenter Jie Lin, an assistant professor in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center's department of epidemiology, said in a news release from the cancer center. "We wanted to find out if meat consumption increases the risk of developing bladder cancer and how genetic differences may play a part."

This study tracked 884 patients with bladder cancer and 878 who didn't have it. They responded to questionnaires about their diets. Read more...

Pomegranate juice components block cancer cell migration

One of the most dreaded consequences of cancer is when the disease metastasizes -- meaning it spreads from the primary site where it started to other parts of the body. But University of California, Riverside (UCR) scientists have announced what could be a major breakthrough in halting metastasis. They've discovered components in pomegranate juice that inhibit the movement of cancer cells and weaken the attraction of malignant cells to a chemical signal that has been shown to promote metastasis.

The UCR findings were just presented at the American Society for Cell Biology's 50th Annual Meeting, which is being held in Philadelphia. Specifically, the research team from the UCR laboratory of Manuela Martins-Green, Ph.D., found that pomegranate juice seems to block the spread of prostate cancer cells to the bone. The group is planning additional tests to determine the effects of various doses of the natural pomegranate compounds and whether there are any side effects. Read more...
