Buerger’s Disease- Its Effects and Causes

Smoking is related to a number of diseases out of which Buerger’s disease is one.

Buerger’s disease is a disease in which there is clotting as well as inflammation in the arteries and veins of the hands and the feet. Due to this the veins and arteries block further blood supply to the fingers and toes which causes pain, color changes, coldness etc. A person suffering from Buerger’s disease experiences severe pain in the affected parts, especially fingers and toes. Chronic Migraines Take a Greater Toll

(HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that there's a difference between people who have migraines a lot and those who have them less often: The most frequent sufferers are in worse health overall, poorer and more depressed.

The finding comes from a study of nearly 12,000 people with headaches that were labeled either episodic, if they occurred no more than 14 days a month, or chronic, if they occurred 15 or more days a month.

Those with chronic migraines made a lot less money, were less likely to work full-time and were nearly twice as likely to have a job-related disability as the other headache patients. Read more...

Clues to Preventing Return of Liver Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- Antiviral therapy may halt or slow recurrence of liver cancer in patients with chronic hepatitis B and extend their lives, finds a new study.

Previous research has shown that antiviral therapy reduces the incidence of liver cancer in such patients.

This study looked at 15 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who underwent the local removal of a liver tumor known as a "single hepatocellular carcinoma" (HCC) that was less than four centimeters. HCC is the most common primary malignant tumor of the liver.

Six of the patients were diagnosed between 1991 and 1997, prior to the development of antiviral therapy. They were classified as historical controls.

The other nine were diagnosed between 2000 and 2004 and began ongoing antiviral therapy with lamivudine immediately after HCC diagnosis. In some cases, patients were also prescribed other antiviral medications, such as tenofovir and adefovir. Read more...

Cookware chemicals disrupt hormones, lead to early menopause, study finds

The type of cookware you use can make all the difference in determining the health of you and your family. Researchers from West Virginia University (WVU) recently found that perfluorocarbons (PFCs), an artificial chemical commonly used in non-stick cookware, can disrupt hormonal balance and lead to early menopause in women.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the study contains data on 26,000 US women between 42 and 64 years old. Upon evaluation, the research team found that women with the highest blood concentrations of PFCs tended to go through menopause much earlier than women with low levels of PFCs in their blood, and that PFCs led to "significantly lower" levels of estrogen in women's bodies. Green and orange vegetable consumption - an indicator of longevity

Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

No matter how many different dietary theories there are out there, pretty much everyone agrees that vegetables are “good for you”. But how good they truly are has been debated – there are plenty of observational studies linking vegetable consumption to favorable health outcomes, but other studies have made headlines by casting doubt on how powerful plant foods are for preventing disease. The data from these observational studies is often flawed simply because the majority of people in the Western world don’t eat enough vegetables to have a measurable impact on their risk of chronic disease – only about 25% of Americans eat the recommended three one-cup servings of vegetables each day.
