Preventing Kidney Disease?

Q: I have been told I have a high reading of protein in my urine. My doctor prescribed lisinopril. I don't like the side effects. Is there anything natural I can take to decrease the protein level?

A: Proteinuria - protein in the urine (determined by urinalysis) - often indicates some type of kidney disease. The first thing you have to determine is what is causing the problem. Normally, the kidneys filter waste products out of the blood so they can be eliminated from the body. Most proteins are too big to pass through the kidneys' filtering system unless the filters have been damaged in some way.

Among the possibilities: some variety of nephritis, a group of diseases, usually autoimmune, that cause inflammatory damage to the kidneys. Diabetes can also result in kidney damage, as can high blood pressure. In fact, elevated blood pressure often accompanies kidney disease and accelerates it. Read more...

Diet, Exercise Better Than Vitamins in Promoting Health

Harvard men's health watch is telling everyone how dangerous vitamin supplements are. Unfortunately they are not kidding!

Please know that although we have our references to try to refute these statements, your patient's families will be hearing this stuff.

While it was once hoped that supplements of folic acid could help reduce colon cancer, new research has shown that taking more than the minimum daily requirement would be harmful. Simon says other studies underscore the downside to dietary supplements, which are unregulated in the United States. "The most striking example is beta carotene, which we used to be very hopeful about, but actually increases the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Vitamin E increases the risk of second head-neck cancers in people who have been successfully treated for a first malignancy."

The truth is that the folic acid most get in supplements is not the natural form that is called 5'MTHFR (Metafolin by Merck of Germany) and since it is over $12,000 a Kilogram it is not in most supplements. Read more...

Cancer Gap Between Whites, Blacks May Be Biological in Part

(HealthDay News) -- Even when they get identical medical treatment, black Americans with breast, ovarian and prostate cancer tend to die earlier than patients of other races, a finding that suggests biological or genetic factors may play an important role.

For many years, the disparity in racial survival was attributed to the fact that black cancer patients have less access to quality care, are diagnosed when their cancer is in later stages, and don't receive the same standard of care as white patients.

But this analysis of almost 20,000 patient records from the Southwest Oncology Group's database of 35 clinical trials found no statistical difference in survival based on race for several other cancers -- lung, colon, lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.

"The good news is that for most common cancers, if you get good treatment, your survival is the same regardless of race. But this is not the case for breast, ovarian and prostate cancers," study author Dr. Kathy Albain, a breast and lung cancer specialist at Loyola University's Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center in Maywood, Ill., said in a school news release. Merck Sat on Data Showing Vioxx Risks for Years Before Pulling Drug

(NaturalNews) A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has revealed that information about heart risks from pharmaceutical giant Merck's Vioxx drug was available in 2000, four years before the Merck pulled the drug from the market. Because the information was not published and made public, Merck sat on it until a later clinical trial openly revealed that the drug was causing strokes and heart attacks.

Dr. Harlan Krumholz, study author from the Yale University School of Medicine, noted that he obtained pertinent safety data about Vioxx only after a lawsuit was filed against Merck by those who had been injured by the drug. It was discovered that out of the 30 studies conducted by Merck prior to when Vioxx was withdrawn, only 18 of them had been published. Six were published after the drug was withdrawn and six were never published at all. Read more...

How Vitamin D Protects Your Heart

As you know, getting the right amount of vitamin D treats and prevents a variety of ailments and diseases. A new study has linked the body's most natural source of vitamin D -- sunshine -- to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease.
